Young jazz from Austria which will catch your attention: ‘I believe this musician with the knitted cap to be one of the most interesting and exciting representatives of young jazz from Europe. When David Helbock performs, you experience something new. It’s never rational music, but a music that pulls on the strings of your heart as well as speaking to your head,’ wrote jazz critic Roland Spiegel about the pianist born in Austria in 1984. In 2016, Helbock’s trio released Into the Mystic CD where Raphael Preuschl doesn’t play the double bass but a bass ukulele. The arranged soundscape of the three musicians is interspersed with emphasised passages, lyrical elements, and powerful beats. It starts with the famous funeral march from Beethoven’s 7th symphony and swells into a jazz version of the Star Wars theme song.
